Although, the 56th birthday of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, fondly called Yayi and the Aremo of Yewa Land, celebrated in service on August 10, 2025, has gone, its impact on the entire Ogun State cannot be eroded many years to come. Yayi, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, a grassroots and national philanthropic politician and a chartered accountant by the first address, refused to mark his birthday with champagne toasts or private banquets but with the hum of power being restored to forgotten communities. In a gesture that married celebration with service, the Senator commissioned the distribution of 102 transformers to 435 Community Development Areas across Ogun State, a move that lit up not just streets but faces.
Yayi’s story is one of a man who has walked the long road from grassroots activism to national prominence, carrying with him an instinctive understanding of the needs of the ordinary Nigerian. His latest birthday gift to the people of Ogun State is more than a token; it is a statement – electricity as empowerment, infrastructure as dignity.
At the commissioning ceremony, his chief of staff described the project as ‘a statement to the senator’s catalytic role in human capital development, rural infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.’ Over the years, Yayi’s initiatives have reached over 50,000 people, through training programme, scholarships, grants, and targeted development interventions.
This latest gesture is a prove to his preparedness to take Ogun State to eldorado starting from May 29, 2027, after he might have been sworn-in as the next Ogun State governor, succeeding Dapo Abiodun, described by President Bola Ahmed as a grammarian. Yayi understands the plight of the people; hence he will do his best as a progressive to be a true Awoist in office.
Praise poured in from all corners. The socio-political group, Ogun Visionaries for Senator Yayi hailed him as “an illustrious son of Ogun State” whose leadership blends humility with transformative vision. “We see in him not just a lawmaker,” the group’s statement read, “but a servant-leader whose footprints in Ogun West and beyond will endure.”
For his friends and associates, the milestone was personal. One close ally spoke with warmth and reverence: “He has touched my life and not just my life but the lives of my colleagues. He is a mentor who became a brother.”
Another was bolder, tying birthday wishes to political prophecy: “He is someone God sent… so generous. By 2027, I believe he will be Executive Governor of Ogun State.”
On the social media, many people speak. While Akewiagbaye noted “I pray he become the governor even though it’s our money he’s spending it well”, Omotolani stated, Yayi is the best governor we should have now stressing that Yayi is the awaiting governor of Ogun State.
Others who spoke are Obaksolo, Femmy Akeem Adeniyi and Adeshewa. The trio said respectively, “This man should just become the GOVERNOR one time. He’s doing too well. I can’t imagine Abeokuta will turn into when he becomes Governor”, “Yayi always delivers not today; he’s a good man”, and “I hope he can win the governorship election and help us do our roads in Ogun state.” Another unidentified person simply said, “Te fun Yayi.” (vote for Yayi).
Responding, Yayi said, “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible birthday wishes and the amazing surprise celebrations across Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole! Your love, thoughtfulness, and efforts made my day unforgettable. Thank you all for making me feel so special.”
In a political landscape often criticised for detachment, Yayi’s brand of celebration offers a counter-narrative, one where the candles on a cake are replaced by the flicker of newly powered bulbs in rural homes.
As the sun set on his 56th year, the message was clear: leadership is not about how loudly one celebrates, but how deeply one’s impact is felt. And for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, the best way to mark another year is to give his people the gift of light, literally and figuratively.
