The unfolding succession battle for the Awujale of Ijebuland took a sensational twist on Thursday, December 11, 2025, as the Fusengbuwa Ruling House categorically distanced itself from Fuji legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), declaring that the celebrated musician has no ancestral ties to the dynasty and therefore cannot vie for the throne.
The ruling house issued an unambiguous rebuttal following widespread reports that K1 De Ultimate had submitted documentation signaling interest in the race to succeed the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
In a formal statement endorsed by leaders of the Fusengbuwa family, the ruling house dismissed the claim as false and misleading, insisting that KWAM 1 does not belong to their genealogical tree.
Those who signed the official letter disowning Waisu Ayinde as a member of the Fusengbuwa family are: Otunba Lateef Owoyemi (chairman), Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba (Deputy Chairman), Chief Prof. Fassy A.O. Yusuf, Pastor Prince Bola Salami (General Secretary), Otunba Akinola Odedian (Head of Jadiara Royal House), and Alh. Adebisi Quadri (Co-Head, Jadiara Royal House).
“For the avoidance of doubt, your claim to the membership of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House is REJECTED, and the completed form is of no consequence,” the statement read.
The family underscored that the Awujale title is strictly hereditary and governed by centuries-old lineage protocols that cannot be influenced by fame, social standing, or public affection.
Only direct descendants of recognised branches of the Fusengbuwa bloodline qualify for consideration, the family noted, an ancestry they maintain the Fuji maestro does not possess.
According to the ruling house, their position is based on “undisputed historical records, lineage authentication processes, and ancestral documentation preserved across generations.”
Seeking to prevent public misinterpretations, the Fusengbuwa family clarified that their stance has nothing to do with personal hostility toward the musician.
They acknowledged KWAM 1 as a cultural ambassador of Ijebuland whose artistic contributions have elevated the global profile of Yoruba music.
However, they maintained that prestige and cultural influence are not substitutes for royal blood adding, “The fact that he is a distinguished son of Ijebuland does not translate to royal entitlement.”
The Awujale stool, one of the most influential royal positions in Yorubaland, became vacant with the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for more than 60 years and commanded exceptional respect across Nigeria.
With the succession process now formally underway, the ruling houses traditionally entitled to the throne have begun asserting their claims, sparking intense public scrutiny and internal debates.
KWAM 1’s alleged bid instantly ignited social media chatter, amplified by his long-standing closeness to the Ijebu palace and his personal relationship with the late monarch.
It remains uncertain whether the Fuji star will contest the ruling house’s position, seek an audience with the kingmakers, or quietly step back from the controversy. But Thursday’s emphatic declaration signals that the road ahead may be far stormier than expected.
For now, one thing is unmistakable: the succession struggle for the Awujale throne has entered a new and dramatic chapter, one where even celebrity status offers no shortcuts through the rigid gates of tradition and ancestry.
