Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Senator) Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, could not hide his disdain for one of his foremost colleagues, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, as he refused to have a handshake with Alaafin.
The ugly and shameful incident happened at the Secretariat Grand Space, behind the Oyo State House of Assembly, where Oba Ladoja refused to accept the handshake the already seated Alaafin extended to him when he arrived at the occasion.
Afterwards, the two foremost kings who sat side by side refused to talk to each other while the programme lasted.
In a video trending on social media, the friendly atmosphere became charged when the Alaafin, as a matter of courtesy, on his seat, extended his hand to greet the Olubadan, which the Olubadan did not accept by pretending as if he did not see the Alaafin. This happened shortly after Olubadan had exchanged pleasantries with dignitaries on the seat, including Governor Seyi Makinde and his deputy, Bayo Lawal.
The development has ignited debates around custom, hierarchy among traditional rulers, and the relationship between the Yoruba kings.
However, at the time of filing this report, Olubadan, Alaafin, and the state government are yet to officially make statements regarding the awkward incident
