The ARISE News Channel has announced the untimely death of its staff, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who tragically lost her life in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie, was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja, according to the station. The incident is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.
At just 29 years old, Maduagwu was a news anchor, reporter, and producer whose on-screen presence earned her admiration from viewers across Nigeria and beyond. She was celebrated not only for her journalism but also for her professionalism, warmth, and ability to connect deeply with audiences.
Outside broadcasting, she was also a trained lawyer, widely regarded by colleagues as diligent, supportive, and committed to excellence.
In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of ARISE management, the station expressed profound grief over the loss, describing Sommie as “a vibrant voice” and “a cherished member of the ARISE News family.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement read.
Her passing has sent shockwaves through the media industry, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, friends, and viewers who remember her for her dedication, energy, and humanity.
