In a shocking act of violence, armed assailants attacked St. Andrews Anglican Church, Isiokwe in Lilu community, Ihiala Local Government Area, on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 2025, leaving two people dead, including the wife of the church priest.
The attackers also set vehicles, the priest’s residence, and parts of the church ablaze.
Eyewitnesses said the attack, which took place as worshippers were preparing for Sunday services, sent the community into panic.
At the time of filing this report, the church premises revealed a scene of devastation. The compound appeared deserted, with burnt debris and damaged property scattered across the grounds.
One resident recounted the ordeal: “Heavily armed men stormed the church early in the morning. They began shooting and setting fire to buildings, including the priest’s house. Tragically, the priest’s wife and another person were killed, while several others were injured. Vehicles and parts of the church were also destroyed. This attack on a holy day has shocked the entire community.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the attack in the strongest terms and assured the public that steps are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The attack carried out by armed criminals resulted in fatalities and serious injuries, as well as the destruction of property at a church in Lilu, Ihiala LGA. This heinous act is an affront to the sanctity of life and freedom of worship,” Ikenga said.
He added that the police have intensified intelligence-driven operations, deployed joint security teams, and strengthened surveillance in the area.
“We urge residents to remain calm and assist the security operatives by providing any information that may aid the investigation. No effort will be spared to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full weight of the law,” Ikenga stated.
Lilu community, located along the border of Anambra and Imo states, has been plagued by gunmen attacks in recent months.
Residents say the latest incident has heightened fears in the area, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security.
