The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the progress and development of Oyo town and Yorubaland at large.
Alaafin emphasised the need to harmonize traditional values with modern governance as a pathway to improving access to justice and resolving conflicts in Nigeria.
Oba Owoade shared this perspective while receiving traditional rulers from the Ibarapa region of Oyo State during a courtesy visit to the palace.
According to a statement signed by the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the revered monarch highlighted that the integration of cultural norms rooted in traditional institutions remains vital to societal stability and conflict resolution.
Describing traditional values as the bedrock of civilisation, Oba Owoade noted that these norms are not just historical artifacts but powerful tools that sustain social order adding, “My plans for the people of Oyo and the Yoruba nation remain resolute. Our cultural values are pillars that uphold our collective identity and bring order to society, preventing chaos and lawlessness.”
The Alaafin further asserted his role not just as a custodian of tradition but as a bridge between the old and the new, working to ensure that cultural heritage is preserved while embracing modern governance.
He added, “The Alaafin’s throne symbolises cultural pride, unity, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most formidable empires.”
Reflecting on the historical significance of the Oyo Empire, Oba Owoade described it as a political and military powerhouse that defined Yoruba civilisation.
He emphasised that his role as Alaafin extends beyond ceremonial duties, as he is committed to safeguarding the empire’s rich traditions while steering it towards a harmonious future.
The monarch also called for the same level of support that was given to his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, pledging to follow in his footsteps and uphold the legacy of strong leadership and community unity.
In his remarks, the Olu of Igbo-Ora Land, Oba Jimoh Olajide Titiloye, Asoroolu Ayinla V, who led the Ibarapa monarchs to the palace, expressed confidence in Oba Owoade’s leadership stating, “As you ascend this sacred responsibility, we trust that your wisdom and commitment will further strengthen the unity and progress of Oyo Kingdom, Yorubaland, and Nigeria as a whole.”
Oba Titiloye further noted that Alaafin Owoade stands at a historic juncture, succeeding Oba Adeyemi III, who was celebrated as one of the most influential and longest-serving monarchs in Yoruba history.
