A catastrophic plane crash in Ahmedabad has claimed the lives of nearly all 242 people aboard an Air India flight bound for London. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as Flight AI171, crashed into a residential complex shortly after takeoff, erupting into a fireball just 32 seconds after leaving the runway at 1:38 p.m. local time on June 12, 2025.
The ill-fated aircraft was en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Air India has confirmed that the flight included 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian.
According to city Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, there were no known survivors from the crash site except one: 40-year-old British-Indian national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who miraculously escaped with injuries and is receiving treatment. Malik warned that “some locals would have also died,” as the aircraft crashed into a residential building that housed doctors and medical students. “It’s heartbreaking beyond words,” he added.
Victims Include Families, Medical Professionals
Among the victims were a young Indian doctor couple, Dr. Komi Vyas and Dr. Prateek Joshi, along with their three children: eight-year-old daughter Miraya and five-year-old twin sons Nakul and Pradyut. The family was relocating to the UK for a new chapter in their lives. A final selfie of the smiling family taken moments before takeoff has now become a haunting symbol of the tragedy.

Others confirmed dead include British couple Akeel Nanabawa and Hannaa Vorajee from Gloucester, England, and their four-year-old daughter Sara. The family was known for its charitable work, including raising funds for humanitarian causes in Gaza and healthcare in India. Sara’s headteacher, Abdullah Samad, described her as a “ray of sunshine who lit up the classroom.”
Emergency Response and Global Condolences
Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran announced the establishment of an emergency support center to assist families. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event,” he said.
British Cabinet Minister Lucy Powell said the UK government is coordinating support for victims’ families. “This is an unfolding story that is causing a huge amount of worry and pain to many communities,” she said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow on social media platform X: “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. My thoughts are with everyone affected.”
Crash Investigation and Aircraft Background
Experts believe the aircraft lost thrust shortly after takeoff, causing it to descend rapidly and explode. Former senior pilot Captain Saurabh Bhatnagar noted, “This can happen only in case the engine loses power or the aircraft stops developing lift.”
This marks the first-ever fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 since the model’s introduction in 2009. Boeing has acknowledged the incident and confirmed it is working with investigators to determine the cause.
Aviation Safety Network has listed the crash as the deadliest in India in over a decade.
Rescue operations continued into the night, with emergency workers recovering remains from the rubble of the collapsed residential building. One anonymous police official stated, “It took hours to make sense of the chaos. And it’s not just those on board — many students and doctors in the building have also died.”
As the world mourns, families are left grappling with unimaginable loss, and investigators face the daunting task of unraveling the circumstances behind one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent history.
