The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a change in its leadership, with National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu taking over as Acting Chairman following the commencement of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s terminal leave.
The handover was formalised on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner, will oversee the affairs of INEC pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
In his remarks, Yakubu expressed gratitude to the commission’s staff and stakeholders for their cooperation throughout his tenure.
He urged them to extend the same level of support to Agbamuche-Mbu as she assumes leadership.
“She is a seasoned commissioner with vast experience in the commission’s operations. I encourage everyone to support her as she leads INEC in this transitional period,” Yakubu said.
Agbamuche-Mbu, in her acceptance speech, thanked the commission for the trust placed in her and pledged to uphold its core values.
“Our commitment to transparency, accountability, and credible elections remains unwavering. I will continue to build on the strong foundation laid by Professor Yakubu,” she assured.
The transition is expected to ensure seamless continuity in the commission’s administrative and electoral activities as the country prepares for upcoming political events.
