A 27-year-old accountant, Oke Peter, was on Friday arraigned before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his employer of N4.5 million.
Peter, who was charged with one count of stealing, pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
Prosecutor ASP Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 5 at Mega Mart Mall Limited in the Mowo area of Badagry. He alleged that Peter diverted N4.5 million from the company’s sales capital, belonging to the complainant, David Uniugbe.
Ekpo said the matter was reported to the police, leading to Peter’s arrest. The offence, he noted, contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
Chief Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. He ruled that one of the sureties must be a community leader and must deposit N50,000 into the court’s Chief Registrar’s account.
The case was adjourned until October 10 for mention.
