A deadly street race involving students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State has claimed four lives. The tragedy unfolded when two students reportedly engaged in a high-speed contest to win a ₦30,000 cash prize.
Eyewitnesses said both drivers lost control of their vehicles during the race, crashing into a roadside shop near a local garage. One occupant from each car died instantly, while a third victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Two people inside the shop at the time of the crash also lost their lives.
The collision caused significant property damage, and disturbing videos shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed bystanders frantically attempting to overturn one of the cars to free victims trapped underneath.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage online, with Nigerians calling for a crackdown on illegal street racing and reckless driving among young people. As of press time, neither the police nor the school authorities had issued an official statement.
