A 19-year-old driver, identified as Nsikak Okon, has been arrested by police after a dangerous spree of high-speed, reckless driving that left three officers injured in Benin, Edo State.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, detailed the incident on his official X account on Friday in response to a viral video showing the suspect’s arrest.
The video, shared by X user #ChuksEricE on Thursday, captured the moment Okon, driving a Mercedes-Benz, attempted to evade security operatives. The post described how the young driver “hit several cars and some pedestrians” before being apprehended.
According to Hundeyin, Okon was initially spotted driving a heavily tinted vehicle with no license plates. “You met police officers on the road and sped past in a very reckless manner,” Hundeyin wrote. “On your way back, you sped past again, nearly knocking down an officer. And in what appears to be very deliberate, you came back again with the same reckless speed, this time successfully knocking down three officers.”
Two of the injured officers have been discharged from the hospital, while one remains under medical care. The rampage also caused damage to other vehicles before Okon was finally intercepted by authorities.
A search of Okon’s car reportedly revealed substances suspected to be hard drugs. “Why have you decided to start your 2026 like this, 19-year-old Nsikak Okon?” Hundeyin questioned in his post, underscoring the severity of the offences, which include reckless driving and possession of illicit substances.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
